Last May, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona hosted the awards and distinctions ceremony for the 13th edition of the Mod Portrait competition. Gómez Cambronero was recognized as a finalist for his work “El Abrazo” (The Embrace). This 165 x 165 cm painting, created on canvas using oil and charcoal, portrays the distance separating many refugees from their families and the anguish of not knowing about their loved ones. Above all, it symbolizes hope and the belief that there is always an open door to a new life.
“El Abrazo” was first exhibited in November 2023 in Brussels at the main building of the European Parliament headquarters. The exhibition featured outstanding works that later received significant distinctions, prominence that comes as no surprise given that the European Unity exhibition was considered one of the most notable cultural events held at the European institution in recent years.
