Spanish painter Gómez Cambronero returns to Sweden this week to take part in Synergy of 4, an international exhibition opening on 28 August at Galleri SVEA in Stockholm. The show, organised by ArtiShow, will remain open until 3 September.
The exhibition brings together works by Gómez Cambronero, Swedish artist Martina Ehrenborg, Colombian artist Ani Mesa and Spanish artist Amparo Alegría. Four artists with distinct visual languages and different approaches to contemporary art will share the same space for a limited time.
Gómez Cambronero will present eleven paintings shaped by some of the defining elements of his artistic language: urban spaces, light, reflections, colour, the human figure and the ability to discover a story behind seemingly everyday scenes. Five of the works have been created especially for this exhibition.
The event holds particular meaning for the artist because of the close relationship he has developed with Sweden in recent years. Interest in his work has steadily grown in the country, and several of his paintings are now part of private Swedish collections. This new visit will allow him to reconnect with some of those collectors and meet others who have been following his work.
“Sweden has become a very special place for me. Knowing that a work you have painted in your studio becomes part of someone’s life thousands of kilometres away is difficult to put into words. Being able to return now, meet some of those collectors and share my paintings with them in person is one of the things I am looking forward to most about this exhibition,” says Gómez Cambronero.
An increasingly international career
Gómez Cambronero’s precise visual compositions reveal his background as a civil engineer. This technical rigour is combined with the passion of an artist who began painting as a child in Daimiel, in the Spanish region of La Mancha.
He currently defines his artistic language as contemporary figurative narrative: a form of painting in which realism coexists with expressive elements, broken contours, colour, movement and atmospheres that seek to move beyond a purely literal representation of reality.
In recent years, Gómez Cambronero has increasingly developed his career internationally, with exhibitions and projects in the United States, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Monaco, Hungary, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. One of his most significant projects was his solo exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels in autumn 2023.
His work has received national and international recognition, and his paintings are now held in private collections across Europe, Asia and North America.
The international direction of his career has not changed the intimate way in which he approaches the canvas. On the contrary, it has reinforced a process that begins with the untouched white surface and continues until colour, gesture and narrative become a finished work.
“I am not interested in painting simply to produce work. I need to feel that there is a story, an emotion or an idea behind every painting. I like to give each painting and every brushstroke the time it deserves, while preserving something spontaneous and authentic. For me, painting remains a passion, a way of telling stories and a refuge for all the images, thoughts and concerns that build up inside me.”
Further creative challenges
The Stockholm exhibition follows several intense months in which Gómez Cambronero has combined painting with commissions and a range of creative projects.
These include a work created for the cover of a novel and the design of the visual identity for a premium olive oil label. His upcoming projects include another book cover, artistic design for an exclusive red wine, several pending painting commissions and the preparation of new work for future exhibitions and competitions.
In the coming months, Gómez Cambronero will also begin work on a new artistic project that will culminate in an important exhibition abroad. The project is still in its early stages.
“I have always enjoyed setting myself new challenges. Perhaps that is why I have never wanted to limit myself to a single subject or a single way of painting. I need to experiment, learn and experience new things. The day I stop feeling that curiosity, my painting will probably lose an important part of its meaning too,” he explains.
Alongside his own artistic career, Gómez Cambronero is the director of TARTGET PRIZE, an international painting competition that, after only two editions, has become an increasingly recognised platform on the international art scene.
On 18 September, the Ateneo de Madrid will host the award ceremony and the opening of the exhibition featuring the selected artists from the 2026 edition.
