A Unique Workshop in Barcelona
From May 18 to 22, 2022, Gómez-Cambronero attended one of the rare workshops led by Antonio López. This time, the event took place in the iconic Palau Dalmases in Barcelona, a historic space that provided the perfect setting for several days of intensive learning. “It was a unique experience,” Gómez-Cambronero recalls, “to share such personal moments with someone I deeply admire and to receive his advice on my work, themes, and artistic journey.”
During the workshop, Antonio López’s words deeply resonated with him, prompting a complete re-evaluation of his career. “He made me reflect on the importance of pursuing a more personal, authentic approach to painting and enjoying it as a way to share emotions,” he confesses. It was an invitation to rediscover the essence of his art, to move away from clichés, and to connect more intimately with his own sensitivity.
A Portrait for the Master
Months later, at an event held at the School of Civil Engineering in Madrid, Gómez-Cambronero reunited with Antonio López, this time as an attendee. The school, located on a hill from which López has immortalized Madrid in several of his works, hosted an event where the master shared his vision of art, his career, and the stories behind some of his most iconic creations.
Seizing this new opportunity, Gómez-Cambronero decided to pay tribute to his mentor by creating a charcoal portrait of Antonio López, which he personally gifted to him. “It was a gesture of gratitude for everything his work and his way of understanding art have meant to me,” explains the painter from La Mancha. According to Gómez-Cambronero, López’s reaction was warm and heartfelt—a moment that will remain etched in his memory.
Encounters That Inspire
For Gómez-Cambronero, these encounters with such influential figures are not only a privilege but also an essential stimulus for his artistic growth. “The experiences and words of Antonio López not only inspire me but push me to keep exploring, to take on challenges, and to grow as a painter,” he says.
In a career already marked by international recognition and a growing presence in collections worldwide, these moments with a master of Spanish realism are undoubtedly milestones that define a before and after. Gómez-Cambronero continues to establish himself as an artist dedicated to his personal journey, one where emotions and human connections fuel his creativity.
The legacy of Antonio López, beyond his paintings, also lives on in artists like Gómez-Cambronero, who keep the essence of contemporary realism alive while advancing toward new forms of expression through their work.
