When irrationality leads life to be reduced to mere survival, when you have reached the limit, all that is left is to flee your home, to distance yourself from the land where you grew up and never thought you would leave. You barely have a key to ensure a future for your children. You have to open the door to the border and get them to safety.
Without intending to, in an instant, you have become a refugee. Ahead, there is still much hunger to endure and too much suffering to silence. Some cross the vastness of the ocean in a small boat, seeking a land of peace, while others travel thousands of kilometres on foot or packed into vehicles, having paid smugglers who trade in the pain of others. In the best-case scenario, they will manage to reach a refugee camp. For others, there is the prospect of wandering the streets with no place to sleep; that is, if death hasn’t caught up with them during the pilgrimage.
Among conflicts, there is nothing more heart-wrenching than civil wars. In South Sudan, violence erupted a decade ago, but there is no end date in sight for its consequences. The coup in 2013 unleashed terror on the population. Escape was the only way out for tens of thousands of people. Today, more than 50,000 refugees are crowded into the Kule camp, 40 kilometres away from the border, in the territory of neighbouring Ethiopia.
There we find this family, one of many. Gathered in their tent, they watch with anticipation, trapped in uncertainty. Physically and emotionally connected, but alone and free in the field that opens up the imagination. Each one designs their own story, envisioning a future with varying degrees of optimism. Distant and uncertain, together or apart, but a future nonetheless. Dignity is the bare minimum a person aspires to in order to be considered as such. And that condition, however basic it may seem, will be unattainable if we, the privileged, are not willing to provide it. Tragedy unfolds, waiting for our reaction as spectators, as consumers of others’ misfortunes.
This work is part of the European Unity collection, which Gómez Cambronero presented in November 2023 in a major solo exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels.
