Memories always haunt us. It’s inevitable. Sometimes, they aren’t clear enough to remember exactly what happened, but they still give us a general idea. That seed remains planted in our feelings forever.

When conflict displaces your loved ones, when you've seen your parents and siblings cry inconsolably, the body trembles. Yet, out of weakness grows the need to move forward, not to give up, and to find any place to reclaim the right to live in peace. It’s the fight for oneself, for your children, and for those yet to come. *The Dream* explores all those latent emotions in the protagonist's mind, a young refugee girl. It conveys the unwavering desire to leave behind the place that is dehumanizing you.

Dreams seeks to express all those mixed emotions dwelling in the protagonist's mind, a young refugee girl. The struggle and the longing to leave that place and find a new home to start a family and live a new life. The paper boat symbolizes the incredible story of the Syrian girls Sarah and Yusra Mardini and what they had to endure in 2015. The protagonist of the artwork propels that boat in search of a future and dreams, unaware that at the end, an uncertain reality awaits her—a cayuco that could one day become either her death or her salvation under a sky filled with uncertainty and despair.

This work is part of the European Unity collection, which Gómez Cambronero presented in November 2023 in a major solo exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels.
